Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an advanced endoscopic and radiological procedure used for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the liver, bile ducts, and pancreatic ducts. Performed by gastroenterology specialists, this procedure involves no external incisions and utilizes natural digestive pathways (from the mouth to the duodenum). During the process, a contrast agent is administered to allow detailed visualization of the bile ducts, with internal images projected onto a screen. Patients undergo the procedure comfortably under sedation provided by an anesthesia team, experiencing no discomfort. ERCP is a safe method, applicable for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, performed by specially trained gastroenterology specialists, and due to its application through the digestive system's cavities, it carries a lower risk of infection compared to other invasive methods.
