Colposcopy is a non-invasive medical procedure that allows for a detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. This method uses a colposcope, a lighted microscope with 6 to 40 times magnification capacity. The colposcope enables clearer visualization and evaluation of abnormalities, lesions, and cellular changes that may be too small to be seen with the naked eye during a gynecological examination. Colposcopy is typically performed when abnormal results are obtained from a Pap smear test or when suspicious findings are detected during a gynecological examination. It plays a critical role in the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and precancerous conditions. If any suspicious area is observed during the procedure, a colposcopic biopsy can be taken from that area for pathological examination.
