The Pap smear, also known as the smear test, is a crucial screening tool primarily used to detect cellular abnormalities, precancerous cells, and infections in the cervix, especially those that could lead to cervical cancer. It can also aid in the early detection of endometrial (uterine lining) cancer. This early detection allows for timely intervention, preventing cellular irregularities from progressing into cervical or uterine cancer, thereby enabling patients to achieve full recovery.
