3D echocardiography can be performed using both transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), the standard 2D echo, and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), also known as endoscopic echo. This technology integrates 3D imaging capabilities into both TTE and TEE procedures. High-quality 2D images are a crucial prerequisite for optimal 3D reconstruction. A primary advantage of 3D echocardiography lies in its enhanced ability to evaluate heart valves, especially the mitral valve, making it an invaluable diagnostic tool. While standard 2D echocardiography provides sectional views of the heart, 3D echocardiography offers a true, realistic three-dimensional representation, similar to direct visualization during open-heart surgery.
