Orchitis and epididymo-orchitis can become chronic if not treated in a timely and adequate manner. In chronic cases, periodic painful and inflammatory attacks may occur. Untreated infection can progress to abscess formation, which may then require surgical intervention. Particularly in young men, blockage of the epididymal ducts caused by epididymitis can lead to permanent damage and infertility.
