Elevated Procalcitonin (PCT) generally indicates the presence of serious bacterial infections, such as sepsis or meningitis. PCT values between 0.5 and 2 ng/mL in the blood may suggest the possibility of a bacterial infection. As this value increases, the severity of the infection is also considered to increase. Sepsis is strongly suspected when PCT levels are between 2 and 10 ng/mL. If the PCT value exceeds 10 ng/mL, severe sepsis and potentially life-threatening conditions may be present. Various conditions can lead to PCT elevation, including upper respiratory tract infections, sepsis, post-surgical wound infections, multiple organ failure, burns, meningitis, urinary tract infections, kidney failure, thyroid cancer, and certain medication regimens.
