Infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as the kissing disease, is caused by a herpes virus called the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). This virus primarily spreads from person to person through saliva. One of the most common routes of transmission for the virus is kissing. Additionally, close contact such as sharing food or drinking from the same glass with an infected person can also lead to the transmission of the disease.
