Elevated prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) can stem from various factors. Primary causes include certain medications such as antidepressants, opiates, antihypertensives, estrogen-containing drugs, some oral contraceptives, reflux medications, and antiepileptics. Additionally, chronic or systemic diseases like chronic kidney failure, acromegaly, and sarcoidosis, as well as endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone) and pituitary gland tumors (e.g., prolactinoma), are significant contributors. Situations like excessive stress and chest wall trauma can also lead to increased prolactin levels.
