Osteomyelitis (bone inflammation) is primarily divided into the following types:
Acute Osteomyelitis: This is a bone infection that appears suddenly with prominent symptoms such as fever and severe pain.
Chronic Osteomyelitis: This is a bone infection that persists or recurs despite treatment. It typically leads to bone pain and periodic pus drainage. This infection can remain asymptomatic for months, or even years.
Vertebral Osteomyelitis: This type of infection affects the spine, causing chronic back pain that worsens with movement. Rest, warm compresses, or pain relief treatments are usually ineffective. Fever is a rare symptom. Nursing home residents, individuals who abuse intravenous drugs, and dialysis patients are at a higher risk for vertebral osteomyelitis.
