Electrolyte imbalances can arise from various factors. Primary causes include dysfunctions of vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, liver, and lungs. Disturbances in the body's water balance, specifically dehydration (fluid loss) or overhydration (excessive fluid intake), are significant triggers. The use of certain medications like laxatives and diuretics can also affect electrolyte levels. Physical activities can also lead to imbalance; strenuous exercise and exposure to high temperatures, in particular, cause significant water and sodium loss through increased sweating. Digestive system issues are also a factor; poor absorption of nutrients can prevent the body from receiving essential vitamins and minerals, even with a healthy diet. Furthermore, conditions such as diarrhea and vomiting can rapidly lead to water and electrolyte loss, disrupting the balance.
