Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a general term for the physical and emotional symptoms that many women experience in the week or two before their period. These symptoms can include bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, anxiety, depression, and mood swings. The symptoms typically disappear once menstruation begins. When symptoms are severe enough to be clinically or socially disruptive, it may be classified as a psychiatric disorder, such as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) or Late Luteal Phase Dysphoric Disorder.
