Lupus nephritis signifies a severe manifestation of lupus where the kidneys are affected. Patients often present with edema, typically in the legs, but sometimes generalized throughout the body. Hypertension is a common co-occurrence. Diagnosis frequently necessitates a kidney biopsy. Treatment protocols are then tailored based on biopsy results, alongside clinical presentation and other laboratory findings. In cases where initial therapies are ineffective, patients may progress to chronic kidney failure, potentially requiring hemodialysis. For select patients with end-stage renal disease, kidney transplantation may be a viable option.
