Adenomyosis is a benign gynecological condition characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue, which normally lines the uterus and is shed during menstruation, into the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium). This condition leads to a thickening of the uterine wall, which can cause prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding, severe cramps, and significant pain. It typically affects women during their reproductive years. While adenomyosis is not a life-threatening condition, the severe bleeding and pain it causes can significantly diminish a woman's quality of life.
