Trigeminal neuralgia balloon compression treatment is a minimally invasive procedure performed under general anesthesia. In this procedure, a fine needle is inserted through the cheek to reach the superficial exit point of the trigeminal nerve's third branch on the face. A small balloon is then carefully inflated next to the nerve for a few minutes, applying controlled pressure to this part of the nerve. This process aims to relieve pain by causing a temporary loss of myelin in the nerve fibers responsible for pain transmission. The goal of the treatment is to modulate pain signals without causing permanent damage to the nerve. While the risk of recurrence is slightly higher compared to microvascular decompression surgery, balloon compression is a highly effective treatment option with a low risk of complications. Furthermore, its repeatability provides the flexibility for reapplication if the condition recurs.
