Pilonidal sinus can sometimes resemble a pimple or an abscess. Some patients may attempt to drain these abscesses on their own. However, draining a pilonidal sinus abscess does not permanently resolve the underlying problem. Pilonidal cysts can be filled with pus, hair, and other cellular debris; it is not possible to completely clear them by squeezing. Furthermore, such an intervention carries the risk of leading to new infections or leaving permanent scars.
