Before an ultrasound examination, the patient is usually asked to wear a hospital gown. After the patient lies down on the examination table in a position appropriate for the area to be scanned, a water-based gel is applied to the skin. This gel optimizes the transmission of sound waves and allows the transducer (probe) to move smoothly over the skin. The radiologist moves the ultrasound transducer, which sends out sound waves, over the area to be examined to capture images. The images reflected by the transducer are simultaneously monitored by the specialist on a screen. To obtain optimal and clear images, the transducer is moved as needed on the skin. Once the procedure is complete, the gel on the skin is easily wiped off, as it is water-based.
