When the thyroid gland's hormone production is insufficient, the pituitary gland increases its release of TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormones. Therefore, in thyroid insufficiency, also known as hypothyroidism, TSH levels are elevated, while the levels of T3 and T4 hormones produced by the thyroid gland are low.
