Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is caused by a mutation in the MEFV gene, which codes for the pyrin protein found in white blood cells. This mutated protein disrupts the functioning of the immune system, leading to inflammation. Research indicates that MEFV gene mutations may also play a role in other autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
