The following criteria should be considered when selecting patients for obesity surgery:
- A Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40 kg/m² or being at least 80% over ideal body weight.
- A BMI between 35-40 kg/m² with co-existing conditions related to obesity such as hypertension, diabetes, or sleep apnea.
- Being between 18-65 years of age.
- Obesity having been present for at least three years.
- No hormonal disease causing obesity.
- Failure to achieve weight loss for at least one year despite medication and diet therapy.
- Absence of chronic alcohol or drug dependence.
- The patient must be at a sufficient psychosocial level to understand the importance of the surgical method, potential risks, and possible adverse outcomes after surgery.
- Having an acceptable risk profile for the surgical operation.
- The patient must be capable of continuing treatment in cooperation with the surgical team, both physically, psychologically, socially, and economically.
