Ultrasound imaging does not provide direct information about the content of masses in the thyroid gland. Therefore, pathological evaluation of a biopsy sample taken from a thyroid nodule provides definitive information on whether the mass is benign or malignant. Advantages of thyroid biopsy include the procedure being fast, economical, comfortable, and safe. Furthermore, if thyroid cancer is not detected after the biopsy, patients can avoid unnecessary surgical interventions. If the nodule is determined to be malignant, this information plays a critical role in determining the scope of the surgical operation to be performed.
