Antiretroviral drugs (HIV medications) can be used for protection following high-risk exposure to HIV. In such a situation, an expert physician should be consulted immediately for an assessment, and if deemed appropriate, prophylactic treatment (PEP - Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) should be started as soon as possible. While research into an HIV vaccine is ongoing, no vaccine is currently available for widespread use.
