Ablation therapy is a medical procedure designed to correct heart rhythm disorders and irregularities. This treatment modality encompasses several distinct types:
Catheter Ablation
As the most common form, catheter ablation aims to regulate heart rhythm by precisely applying either heat (radiofrequency) or cold (cryoablation) energy to specific areas of heart tissue.
Surgical Ablation
Often referred to as a maze procedure, surgical ablation involves the creation of scar tissue using heat or cold energy to block abnormal electrical signals. This procedure is typically performed during open-heart surgery.
Hybrid Surgical / Catheter Ablation
For patients who do not require conventional open-heart surgery, a cardiothoracic surgeon may perform a hybrid procedure, sometimes known as a "mini-maze." This approach integrates elements of both surgical and catheter-based ablation techniques.
