Adenovirus infection is a viral disease caused by adenoviruses, capable of affecting various organ systems such as the respiratory, gastrointestinal, ocular, and urinary tracts. While it can occur in individuals of all ages, it is particularly common in children and can lead to more severe outcomes in immunocompromised individuals. Adenoviruses are highly contagious and can spread rapidly through various routes, with the potential to cause serious health problems in advanced stages. There are 88 known types of adenoviruses that infect humans. Unlike influenza viruses, adenoviruses circulate throughout the year without strong seasonality. Symptoms of adenovirus infection often resemble those of a common cold and can include sore throat, runny nose and eyes, sneezing, headache, cough, and fever. In some cases, adenovirus infections can lead to more specific complications such as croup, bronchitis, conjunctivitis (pink eye), skin rashes, diarrhea, and bladder infections.
