Pilonidal sinus is a common skin condition where loose hairs from the body penetrate the skin, typically in the tailbone area, leading to inflammation and the formation of small cysts or abscesses. This condition often manifests with symptoms such as pain, swelling, redness, and discharge (which may be purulent or bloody). If not diagnosed and treated promptly, chronic pilonidal cysts can develop into larger abscesses and permanent sinus tracts beneath the skin. In some cases, it may initially be asymptomatic; however, over time, symptoms like severe pain, especially when sitting in the tailbone region, can develop. Diagnosis is typically made based on the patient's complaints and physical examination. Following diagnosis, surgical intervention is the most common and effective treatment method for pilonidal sinus.
