The phrenic nerve is a critical nerve originating from the cervical spinal roots C3-C5. Its primary function is to innervate the diaphragm. It contains motor fibers responsible for the mechanical movement of the diaphragm and sensory fibers that transmit sensation (including pain) from the diaphragm.
