Our body produces various types of blood cells and renews them as needed. However, in some cases, these blood cells can begin to multiply uncontrollably, rapidly, and abnormally as a result of genetic changes (mutations) acquired throughout life. This condition leads to a group of diseases known as hematological cancers, or commonly, bone marrow cancers. The exact causes of this abnormal and uncontrolled proliferation of cells are not yet fully understood.
