Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) is a parameter measured in a blood test that indicates the variability in the size of platelets. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are essential components of blood responsible for clotting and play a crucial role in wound healing. A PDW value reflects how uniform or diverse platelets are in size. This vital parameter, along with the platelet count, is determined through a blood analysis. Deviations from the normal range, presenting as either low or high PDW, can be observed and are often associated with the body's platelet levels. Particularly, a low PDW can signify underlying health concerns and may contribute to various medical problems.
