The phrenic nerve is the nerve that both enables the diaphragm's movement and transmits pain sensation from it. This nerve originates from the C3-C5 cervical vertebrae in the neck region. Therefore, damage or irritation to the diaphragm can cause referred pain felt in the neck region (at the cervical root level) where the phrenic nerve originates. This condition is known as Kehr's sign.
