Paracentesis is a medical procedure performed to drain fluid, known as 'ascites,' that accumulates in the abdominal cavity, and to determine the underlying cause of this fluid buildup. This fluid accumulation can develop due to various underlying health issues such as kidney failure, hypertension, heart failure, and cirrhosis. During the procedure, a physician inserts a thin needle or catheter into the abdominal area to drain the accumulated fluid. The fluid obtained is sent to a laboratory for diagnostic examinations. Following paracentesis, patients typically experience significant relief from symptoms such as bloating, shortness of breath, and pain in the abdominal region.
