Osteomyelitis, commonly known as bone infection, is a serious and often painful medical condition. It typically arises when bacteria spread to the bone, often through the bloodstream, affecting the bone marrow and surrounding bone tissue. This infection can occur in both children and adults. If left untreated, the severe inflammation and swelling within the bone can disrupt blood supply, potentially leading to the death of bone tissue. Certain individuals are at an increased risk of developing osteomyelitis. These include people who use tobacco products, individuals with diabetes, and those with chronic health conditions such as kidney failure. Diabetic patients, in particular, face a higher risk of developing osteomyelitis in their feet, especially if they have foot ulcers.
