Cardiac aneurysms are balloon-like bulges in the heart wall that often develop 6–8 weeks after a heart attack. Rarely, they can develop independently of a heart attack. In the community, cardiac aneurysms can be confused with aortic aneurysms, the main artery. While an aortic aneurysm refers to a bulge and rupture in the aorta, a cardiac aneurysm is a bulge resulting from tissue weakening in the heart muscle supplied by the blocked artery after a heart attack. Aortic aneurysms are common in the community, while the incidence of cardiac aneurysms is very low.
