It is possible to produce speech with only one functioning vocal cord; however, the resulting voice quality is typically characterized as hoarse, weak, or low-pitched. The vocal cords themselves are a pair of elastic muscle tissue bands located within the larynx, positioned above the trachea (windpipe). Normally, the space between the vocal cords remains open to allow for proper airflow during breathing.
