Since prostate biopsy is an invasive procedure, the following preparations are of great importance before the procedure:
* Urine Culture: A urine culture should be performed 3 days before the prostate biopsy to confirm that there is no infection in the patient's urinary tract.
* Antibiotic Treatment: As prostate biopsy is typically performed transrectally (via the anus), antibiotic treatment should be started one day before the procedure. According to Memorial Hospital Group protocols, antibiotic treatment is continued for 3 days after the biopsy.
* Bowel Preparation: Due to the frequent transrectal approach for prostate biopsy, it is essential that the bowels are clean before the procedure. For this purpose, the patient needs to receive an enema twice: once on the morning of the biopsy and again one hour before the procedure.
* Cessation of Blood Thinning Medications: The prostate is an organ rich in blood vessels. To reduce the risk of rectal or urinary bleeding after the biopsy, blood thinning medications should be discontinued one week prior to the biopsy. In necessary cases, short-acting blood thinner injections may be recommended for patients.
* Anesthesia and Fasting: Prostate biopsy can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia (sedation). If sedation is chosen, the patient must not consume any food or liquids starting 6 hours before the biopsy.
