Rickets is a skeletal system disease that typically occurs in childhood and results from a prolonged deficiency of Vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D is vital for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus; a deficiency of this vitamin leads to the weakening, softening, and embrittlement of bone structures in children, causing rickets. The most common causes of Vitamin D deficiency include insufficient exposure to sunlight and inadequate consumption of Vitamin D-rich foods. Rarely, some cases of rickets can also be associated with genetic diseases.
