The first step in diagnosing jock itch is a physical examination performed by a dermatologist. In addition to the examination findings, information provided by the patient regarding their medical history and current symptoms is critically important for diagnosis. Although fungal infections typically manifest with symptoms such as discharge, they can vary from person to person and may not always cause noticeable lesions. The presence of other infections in the affected area can make it challenging to differentiate a fungal infection from other skin conditions. Due to the similarity of symptoms, to reach a definitive diagnosis, a swab from the lesion may be examined under a microscope, or a culture sample taken from the lesion may be evaluated for quicker results. A definitive diagnosis is established based on the results of these tests and clinical findings.
