A Smear test, also known as a Pap test, is a procedure where cell samples are painlessly collected from the cervix, the opening of the uterus, using a special brush, typically within a short period of 5-10 seconds. This test is critically important for screening cervical cancer and precancerous cells.
The cervix is the part of the uterus that opens into the vagina and is easily visible during a gynecological examination using a speculum. In women who have not given birth, the cervix is usually observed as a round structure with a central opening, whereas in women who have had a vaginal birth, this opening may appear as a horizontal slit.
