A fasciotomy is a surgical procedure involving the incision of fascia, a tight band of connective tissue that encloses muscles, nerves, and blood vessels in the body. Normally, this fascia supports the muscles, but it can be subjected to excessive pressure due to trauma, severe injuries, or certain medical conditions. This increase in pressure can impede blood circulation in the affected area, leading to nerve damage. If left untreated, this condition can result in permanent tissue damage or muscle necrosis. A fasciotomy is performed by making an incision in the fascia to reduce this dangerous pressure and restore blood flow. This procedure is typically applied in situations such as traffic accidents, sports injuries, fractures, and vascular occlusions, to preserve muscle and nerve functions.
