Paracentesis is a procedure to drain accumulated fluid from the abdominal cavity. While this procedure provides symptomatic relief for the patient, it does not eliminate the underlying cause of fluid accumulation. Therefore, unless the underlying disease is treated, fluid accumulation may recur.
