The symptoms of Pica syndrome vary depending on the type of substance ingested and the complications that arise. Gastrointestinal complaints such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and blood in the stool may commonly be observed. In particular, ingesting substances like soil or dirt can lead to parasitic infections. Consumption of hard or sharp objects can cause tooth damage, decay, or infections. In rare cases, the intake of toxic substances such as mercury or lead can lead to symptoms of poisoning. When serious complications such as intestinal obstruction or perforation develop, severe abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and a general deterioration of condition may occur.
