Risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing black fungus disease (mucormycosis) include, in addition to a weakened immune system, the following conditions: diabetes, HIV or AIDS, organ transplantation, low white blood cell count, long-term steroid use, skin lesions resulting from surgery, burns, or wounds, premature or low-birth-weight delivery, and having a history of COVID-19 infection.
