Colposcopy is an examination method performed in a clinical setting. The patient lies on their back on an examination table with foot supports, similar to a pelvic exam or Pap test. A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to open the vaginal walls, allowing for optimal visualization of the cervix. For a clearer examination, the cervix is washed with a special solution. This solution helps highlight abnormal cells and may sometimes cause a mild burning or tingling sensation. The colposcope device is positioned a few centimeters in front of the vagina; it does not physically touch the patient or enter the vagina. The colposcope magnifies tissues 6 to 40 times, projecting light into the vaginal area to provide detailed imaging. If suspicious lesions are detected, a colposcopic biopsy may be taken.
