For a liver biopsy, the patient is positioned lying on their back. The area where the procedure will be performed is sterilized with an antiseptic solution, and local anesthesia is applied to the needle entry point. A small incision may be made in the skin to facilitate easier needle insertion. Throughout the procedure, the needle's advancement and position within the liver are carefully monitored using radiological imaging (e.g., ultrasound or CT). Image-guided biopsies offer high accuracy and safety. A tissue sample is typically obtained from the liver using a special biopsy needle advanced between the ribs.
