There are two main types of colorectal polyps.

**Adenomatous polyps:** The vast majority of polyps found in the large intestine are adenomas, or adenomatous polyps. Adenomas are among the most common causes of colon cancer. The risk of an adenoma developing into cancer is related to its size and the number of polyps present. Many polyps, while not cancerous when examined under a microscope, have the potential to become cancerous. Adenomatous polyps are classified microscopically into:

* Tubular adenoma
* Tubulovillous adenoma
* Villous adenoma

**Hyperplastic polyps:** The second most common type of colon polyp is the hyperplastic polyp. These generally do not lead to cancer. They are usually less than 0.5 cm in diameter. It is important to identify these polyps and differentiate them from adenomatous polyps.
