Turkey and its surrounding regions have been affected by past cholera epidemics. Cholera outbreaks occurred in Turkey in 1831, 1855, 1865, 1892, 1915, 1960, 1970, and 1994. Some of these epidemics, particularly those in 1831 and 1835, resulted in thousands of fatalities. The last major cholera outbreaks recorded in Turkey were in Istanbul in 1970 and Ankara in 1994.
