While presbyopia is often described as an age-related condition, it is important not to confuse it with hyperopia. Hyperopia is a refractive error that can occur in both children and adults. It happens when the eyeball is too short or the cornea has insufficient power, causing light to focus behind the retina and impairing the eye's ability to focus clearly on nearby objects. It is possible for an individual to have both hyperopia and presbyopia, as presbyopia is a distinct age-related condition characterized by the eye's loss of ability to focus on close objects. Even individuals with myopia (nearsightedness) can develop presbyopia later in life.
