Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging is a diagnostic method that generally has no side effects and does not involve ionizing radiation. Due to this characteristic, it can be safely used for diagnostic purposes in a wide range of patients, including very young babies and pregnant women. However, it is recommended to avoid MRI scans during the first trimester (first 3 months) of pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Scientific studies indicate that MRI is one of the safest imaging methods during pregnancy. Nevertheless, some MRI examinations may require the intravenous administration of a Gadolinium-based contrast agent. MRI scans performed with contrast agents are generally not recommended during pregnancy.
