The serum albumin test is a blood test that measures the level of albumin, a protein produced by the liver and found in blood plasma, in the blood. Albumin plays a critical role in transporting vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and other important substances in the blood. This test can be performed using both blood and urine samples. When kidney function is impaired, albumin from the blood can pass into the urine.
