Epidural anesthesia is the administration of regional anesthetic and analgesic medications into the epidural space, which is located outside the dura mater membrane surrounding the spinal cord. Before the procedure, the patient is positioned sitting or lying on their side, and the application area is cleaned with an antiseptic. Medications are delivered into the epidural space using a thin needle. If additional doses are needed, a thin catheter can be inserted to allow for continuous or intermittent drug administration.
