Following a leg amputation, once the surgical wound is observed to be healing without complications or any signs of issues, the patient can typically begin using a temporary prosthesis around the 3rd week. This process may be faster, especially for below-knee amputations. After ensuring the surgical wound has fully healed, swelling has reduced, and the residual limb is suitable for a permanent prosthesis (generally within approximately 2 months post-surgery), the transition to a permanent prosthesis can be made.
