A rectocele (bowel hernia) may not always lead to noticeable symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they can include complaints such as vaginal bleeding, a feeling of fullness in the rectum, or a frequent urge to defecate. The symptoms of rectocele typically are as follows:

* Pressure and pain in the rectal or vaginal area
* Frequent or urgent urge to defecate
* Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
* A tissue protrusion or bulge felt in the vagina
* A sensation of incomplete emptying of the rectum after defecation
* Constipation or difficulty with bowel movements
* Vaginal bleeding
* Fragmented stool (incomplete evacuation)
* A feeling of looseness or muscle weakness in the vagina
* Difficulties with bowel movements

If rectocele occurs concurrently with another form of pelvic organ prolapse, such as bladder prolapse (cystocele), additional symptoms like frequent urination and urinary incontinence may also be experienced.
